SUSTAINABILITY

BERTOLLI AND SUSTAINABILITY

At Bertolli, sustainability isn’t just a commitment—it’s a core principle that has guided our every step from humble beginnings in a small Tuscan village 160 years ago to being the world’s number 1 olive oil today.*

As the leading global brand, we have a responsibility to our heritage, our industry and most importantly, our consumers to deliver sustainability.

With a core belief that olives’ many benefits can care for us, we take it as our duty to Care for What Cares for You.

Sustainable Production

Our journey towards a greener future starts at the grove. Since 2018 with the establishment of the industry’s first-ever Sustainability Protocol for extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), we have provided more than 52,000 farmers with the tools and knowledge to minimize soil depletion and water usage in order to maximize production and achieve greater sustainability. Additionally, we work with livelihoods to promote fair working conditions and inclusive growth opportunities for all people, including women, young people and other vulnerable groups. To date, we have certified 82 olive oil mills and 680,000 acres in collaboration with Intertek, an independent third-party certification authority. Working hand-in-hand with farmers, we can ensure the highest quality olives are in each bottle of Bertolli, while nurturing the land and preserving olive farming for generations to come.

Recycled plastic (rPET)

Our dedication extends beyond the grove. As the first global brand to launch olive oil packaged in 100% rPET in the US (in 2022), Bertolli supports Deoleo’s global transition to 100% recycled plastic (rPET). This approach not only reduces plastic waste but also emphasizes our commitment to a circular economy. Along with Bertolli’s parent company, Deoleo, the brand contributes to additional initiatives to reduce the resources used in packaging, including optimizing the weight of plastic packaging, which can help reduce material consumption by more than 180 tons annually.

Zero Waste

We are proud to operate zero-waste factories, where we meticulously manage resources to ensure almost nothing goes to waste. Our plants have achieved Zero Waste certifications, with more than 90% of waste being diverted from landfills. This includes, for example, using olive pits and leaves as fuel, animal feed and an organic soil fertilizer. Wherever possible we aim to extend the life of useful materials so they can have a second life. As such, we continually work closely with supply chain partners to identify areas where waste can be reduced. By 2030, our goal is to achieve a 95% Zero Waste certification in our factories.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

Deoleo adheres to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to reduce our carbon footprint at all stages of growing, production, processing and distribution—in the short, medium and long term—though various measures. Initiatives include investments in energy-efficient and low-carbon technologies as well as energy consumption audits and viability studies. Our plants in Spain and Italy use energy from 100% renewable sources certified through Renewable Energies Guarantees of Origin. This demonstrates our dedication to mitigating carbon-driven climate change.
